This campaign is being DM'd by Xjph in an original setting. The system will be 3D tetrahedral matrix boogaloo (D&D4e). The setting will always be incomplete.

Campaign
The campaign will begin with the player characters all involved, in one way or another, with trade between Virrir and the other Panterran nations. They can be guards for merchant caravans, or merchants themselves, anything that would put them into a position of needing to travel in and out of Virrir.
On their most recent trip to Virrir an undisclosed "incident" of some sort took place within Virrir which has the nation on edge, and many people in the capital are beginning to refuse contact with outsiders. The PCs will volunteer/be recruited to offer their services to the Virrir authorities to help hasten the resolution of this issue.

Characters
While any published race/class is allowed it would be preferable to choose a race that has a background in this campaign world. I will make an effort to incorporate any race that a person wants to play. For purposes of the elves in Panterra consider the Vitha'dira to be 4e elves, while the Sindara are eladrin.

Sora
Dragonborn Knight(Philippe)

Brak Greystone
Dwarf Barbarian (Mike)

Caleb Cradlehorn
Halfling Hexblade (Pat)

Asteron
Minotaur Paladin (elbkhm)

Eric Moore
Human Wizard (Ryan)

Marcus Ondore
Jason's Character (Jason)

Setting
For more information, see Panterra.

The world of Panterra is dominated by one large supercontinent surrounded by smaller subcontinents and islands. This supercontinent is large enough to play host to a wide variety of climates, from near arctic, to tropical, to desert.

The majority of the land on the continent is divided among the human kingdoms of Antilla, Regin, Virrir, Thelland, and Clixan. In addition to these is the magical city of Haven, as well as various other independent city states. Most other races have homes on the larger of the surrounding islands, with the exception of halflings, who lead a nomadic lifestyle among the human lands.

Session Log
Prologue

Quon Quinn, Hadari Hanova, Rangrim Rockbore, Errich Everest, Chaedi Calavira and Torbera Telvrik - members of The Stormblades - made their way into an ancient temple. They fought their way through the defences and creatures the temple had of offer. They found the spirit and body of an elf named Silincas, who doesn't appear to know where he is and doesn't know why his mind and body were separated...

One: How I Killed Your (Fledgling) Dragon

Caleb Cradlehorn, Sora, Asteron, Eric Moore, Marcus Ondore and Brak Greystone escorted a caravan containing various goods to Virrir.

Upon reaching the Virran border, the caravan was greeted by guards who informed them that the border was closed; the caravan would simply have to wait at a nearby rest-stop until the border reopened.

The guards would not expand on the nature of the border closing, so Gerard asked the party to take the mountain pass into Virrir. It's unguarded border would enable them to make their way to the town of Cylia and get someone to sponsor their entry.

The mountain crossing was cold; colder than a penguin's chuff. After many days of fighting back the wilderness, and many nights of fighting off the cold, the party discovered a large cavern. Inside they found a fledgling white dragon. A battle ensued, but the party quickly dispatched the nasty reptile and spent the night in its cave.

The next day, they made it to Cylia. There they quickly befriended some locals who offered to sponsor their entry. With the proper documents in hand, they made their way back to the border crossing and the waiting caravan.

Two: Where did my magic boots go?

Shortly after arriving in Cylia the party discovered that most of the magical goods being carried by their caravan, including most of Caleb's Uncle's goods, had disappeared from within their locked chests. Frustrated by this turn of events they approached the government of Cylia to seek redress, only to be informed that the town proper was suffering from a the same issue.

Caleb then spearheaded an investigation of the local troubles, which culminated in mapping out the thefts and establishing that the epicenter of the phenomenon lay several days journey outside of the town. Unfortunately, during the investigation, the party laid a clever trap for the presumed thief using Brak's enchanted boots as bait. The boots were taken, but no thief was found.

The party then left Cylia to seek the center of the phenomenon and put a stop to it. However, they were assailed by ferocious monsters en-route and Caleb was slain. He was later told that the party had bested a number of beasts before finding a magical anomaly that was the source of the phenomenon afflicting both the town and the caravan. Eric, the party's wizard, devised a new ritual to resolve the issue freeing Torbera Telvrik from a failed plane-shift/teleport ritual, and as a sign of her gratitude she called upon her divine power to raise Caleb from the dead.

Origins:
Born in the academic city of Haven Caleb never precisely fit in. His parents modest home in the southern quarter of the city was attached to their family-run bakery and they used their modest arcane talents to produce some of the finest pastries and works of confectionery in haven, perhaps on the continent. Unlike his parents and fellow children Caleb lacked both the talent and the inclination for arcane study which forced him to get by on charm, wit, and occasionally idle larceny.

Shortly after his fourteenth birthday Caleb's uncle Samuel took him under his wing, hiring him as a stock-boy and general helper for his warehouse of arcane goods. However, he made clear that this job was meant to keep Caleb out of mischief, and to prevent him from embarrassing his family with his lack of magical ability. This task, however unwelcome, provided Caleb with his first venture into the Arcanist's Society, a network of merchants spread across the continent specializing in the trade of magical goods and knowledge. Though his uncle never came to respect him, Caleb quickly became a useful member of Samuel's operation. Through managing the stock of goods kept by his uncle Caleb learned how to price, evaluate, and store many arcane items, and the personality traits that had made him such a nuisance to his parents made him an adept negotiator, if an undervalued one.

This would have been Caleb's life, an ill treated if valuable family employee, had it not been for a little luck.

One day, while his uncle was away selling his trinkets Caleb was left behind to clean and inventory the stock they had left behind.
As he was sorting through a particularly dusty corner of the stockroom Caleb felt a sudden chill in the air. Investigating, he found what looked to be a crystalline coffer containing something his uncle's business partners called "frost essence". Upon closer examination however, Caleb noticed the the wall of the coffer had become cracked, and cold air seemed to be seeping through.

In response to his touch a small wave of frost radiated outwards from the coffer, and Caleb heard a voice that seemed to be calling out for something. Listening carefully Caleb determined that it was coming from the crack in the coffer. Putting his ear close he could hear a faint female voice saying "I can help you. Please let me out."

The voice introduced herself as Zoe, and explained that she was trapped there after being attracted to the magical energy of the frost essence the coffer was intended to contain. It was a simple case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time, something Caleb could easily identify with. Zoe had rationed the energy of the frost essence to survive for years inside the coffer, but it had now run out. When she heard movement outside desperation had caused her to expend nearly all her remaining essence to make a tiny crack through which she could reach whoever was outside.

Inside the coffer she could perceive some of the outside world, and had been aware of Caleb's lack of arcane talent, and of the chill it had brought to his family life. In return for her freedom she offered to form an arcane pact with Caleb, offering her now meager power in exchange for freedom, and the creation of a link between their two beings in the hope that Caleb exercising her powers would allow her strength to return and empower them both.

Upbringing:
Caleb's childhood was happy, his parents cared for, him loved him dearly, and owned a bakery. What more could a child want? However, as he progressed into adolescence things steadily became worse. While his parents love never dimmed he felt that his lack of arcane power distanced him from them, a sensation that only grew worse as they put him into his uncle's care to learn his trade.

While Caleb took to his uncle's trade quickly and skillfully he never felt respected. His uncle's staff viewed him as a charity case, no matter what he could bring to the table. The fact that he knew their stock, their business partners, and the back-and-forth of the trading table better than everyone save his uncle, probably didn't help his case with them. But it was his lack of magical aptitude that held him back, a citizen of Haven without magic, no matter how loved or skilled, could never be more than a charity case.

After forging his pact with Zoe Caleb purchased and destroyed the container of frost essence which had imprisoned her, as a sign of good faith. However, rather than making him more valued in the eyes of his co-workers, and easing his relationship with his family Caleb's new found powers simply created another wedge. Caleb's family worried at the sudden appearance of his magical abilities, and when they began to ask questions they swiftly realized that he had bartered with a fey entity for power. Such shortcuts, especially in a person with no previous magical abilities, are frowned upon in Haven. Similarly, his uncle's other staff began to view him as a risk; only fools make pacts for the sake of power.

As a result Caleb has grown colder and more distant from his family, despite his continued cheery demeanor. When his uncle approached him and offered him a "promotion" to field agent in an effort to ease tensions among his staff Caleb was all too happy to accept. That his cooling feelings towards his home and family are a result of Zoe's influence has not even occurred to Caleb, he sees his uncle's offer as a chance to have an adventure, and he has no qualms about leaving Haven. Perhaps time away will help him make peace with his own contradictions.

Current day:
For the last few months Caleb has been traveling the trade routes negotiating the exchange of arcane merchandise, seeking out arcane relics and novelties, and generally been getting up to mischief. However, he has been turning a handsome profit for his uncle, which keeps him well in favour back home, even though he seldom visits.

History
The Redscale clan was a family of noble Dragonborn noted for their unusual crimson-hued scales, their dedication to personal honour, and their unflinching dedication to their people. Before Tragadine was conquered by the orcish tribes five years ago the Redscales were numerous and well armed. However, the orcs devastated their ranks leaving only Bharash and his grandfather Khayid alive after they crushed Tragador's few defenders in the invasion. Bharash was young then, too young to fight alongside his kinfolk; Khayid was too old and too sickly. After the destruction of their clan Khayid was heartbroken, but he struggled past his illness and age to teach Bharash the duties of a paladin of Pelor before passing into his god's arms.

Four years have passed since Khayid's death and Bharash has managed to leverage what little remains of his family's wealth to do right by the people of Tragador. All that remains of clan Redscale's wealth and power is a small chapel, once dedicated to Pelor, which the orcs have denuded of its sacred livery. Here, in the last of his family's holdings, Bharash runs a soup kitchen and infirmary. His clan's wealth, coupled with the orc's appreciation for their ferocity, and opening his doors to all who are injured, regardless of race has ensured that his soup kitchen can feed more than a hundred of Tragador's poor daily. Bharash has no love for the Orcs of Tragdor but his obligation to the people far outweighs his desire to slaughter the orcs.
The Redscale Clan

Clan Redscale has been a valued asset to the people of Tragadine for more than two hundred years, a force serving alongside the local armies devoted to honour, the common good, and the cause of Pelor. In pre-occupation Tragadine the presence of a red-scaled Dragonborn at a social event was considered to be lucky, and no citizen of the capitol fails to recall the Redscale’s valiant efforts at the gates of Tragadine. Though Bharash may be the last of his bloodline on the islands, he is the heir to a legacy of honour and steadfast service to the people.

However, it has not always been so. The church of Bahamut tells us that Tiamat marks those dragonborn who bear the colours of her chromatic dragons; cursing them to live lives of selfishness and servitude to their dark goddess. Thousands of years of persecution have made the lives of chromatic-dragonborn in the Holy Lands difficult at times, but no subset of the population has faced more persecution than the red-scales. In the holy lands the common people view red-scales as cursed, expecting the worst from them in every situation. This persecution lead to the original founding of clan Redscale and their massed exodus to the less fanatical realm of Tragadine.

The dragonborn of clan Redscale discovered two truths that have been passed down from generation to generation. The first is that red-scaled dragonborn are in fact cursed, by Tiamat. They dedicate themselves to Pelor and his cause knowing that their dark primogenitor gazes upon all they do; their defiance of her will has brought many Redscales to a dire end at the hands of her minions. However the founder of their clan, though his name is lost to the mists of time, discovered a prophecy that tells of a Redscaled dragonborn dedicated to one of the gods of light who will break their curse. Thus, he lead his clan to the service of Pelor, hoping that one day they will produce a champion worthy of the sun god’s blessing who will transmute himself and all redscales into a new form, free of Tiamat’s gaze.

Zoe is a devious and opportunistic fey, often encouraging you to take action to spite others and further both your own and her goals.
